Travellers to between 1558 - 1630
‘Wide Wandring Weemen’ : English Women Travellers to Europe, 1558-1630
About the project
This database aims to collate all documented instances of travel to Europe by English women during the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. Among the many different sources used in its construction are licences to travel, Remembrancer Records of the Exchequer, convent chronicles and diplomatic correspondence. The chief purpose of this site, is to draw attention to both the extent and variety of female mobility at the time and provide a useful starting point for scholars and researchers in this area.
